APASE (Arizona Promoters of Applied Science in Education) is announcing the
launching of the 3rd National Underwater Robotics Challenge (NURC) that will
take place on June 12th-14th 2009 at the pool area at Chandler High School. The
backdrop scenario for the 2009 competition is called “Mount Terror: Fire Under
Ice”.
Chandler High School is located at 350 N. Arizona Avenue, Chandler 85225.
The teams participating in the competition will test underwater robots of their
creation in an environment where they will pretend to rescue a multimillion
dollar ROV, damaged while collecting data from the effects of global warming
when a dormant volcano becomes active.
The organizing team will create a simulated environment that will involve
underwater currents to increase the challenge and difficulty of the competition,
testing the engineering and design of the robots.
The event will be open to the public and free. The event can also be viewed
on-line at www.h2orobots.org
the event will be able to follow the underwater competition play by play thru
underwater cameras placed inside the pool. Images from the competition will be
broadcast to several viewing rooms at Chandler High School. The public will be
able to tour the pit area to view the robots competing and to speak with the
young robot creators.
The competition is open to students in home school environments, Jr. High, High
school, Jr. College or University level as well as private corporations. Teams
may consist of combinations of students, industry mentors, faculty members and
parents.
The event will take place during the night so deep sea lighting conditions can
be simulated.
APASE, a grass roots organization that promotes applied science in education is
a community partnership composed of Carl Hayden Falcon Robotics Team, Chandler
High School, Si Se Puede Foundation, students and professional volunteers. APASE
also includes sponsorship from AARP, Intel Corporation, !nventivity LLC, Sead
Architecture, PADT, ASU Alt^I, Channel 99, Lights, Camera, Action, and Critical
